Abstract:

This project focuses on validating three widely used gridded precipitation products—CHIRPS-v2, CHELSA-v2.1, and TerraClimate—across diverse elevations and seasons in East and Southern Africa. By comparing them with rain gauge data using Taylor diagrams and Kling-Gupta Efficiency (KGE), the study highlights their strengths and limitations, particularly in high-altitude regions. The project also investigates long-term precipitation trends using modified Mann-Kendall tests and Sen's slope estimator. The findings underscore the need for ground validation, as higher-resolution or updated datasets do not always guarantee improved accuracy.
